Randomessness (ya, I made that up)

1) So THE day is here, July 11th and the iPhone is officially available in Canada – too bad Robbers, er Rogers is the one company that can support it. Seriously, Canada has the MOST expensive and LEAST feature full plans IN THE WORLD! So until that changes and some form of sanity sinks in, I’ll stick with my already expensive Treo plan with Bell. The Toronto Star has a great summary of Pros & Cons here.

2) CBC.ca had this headline for a top story today:

2 of 5 feet found on B.C. coast belong to same man: RCMP [link]

Now is it me, or does it sound funny to claim the 2 of 5 belong to the same man – I mean the real story would be if ALL 5 belonged to 1 man, don’t you think?

3) What?! CNN.com has a lead story on CANADA?! Specifically about the Alberta Oil Sands [link]

4) Ah yes, now that’s more like it CNN – completely unbiased, riveting and true American-no-nonsense reporting – ‘Are You Black Enough?’ … God bless America – dayum!

5) HOW CAN AMERICANS PASS THIS LAW SO EASILY?! Even Obama caved and supported it (but Hilary didn’t!) [Obama link] , [Bush passes law, ACLU sues link]

So you say ‘I’m Canadian, why do I care?’ – simple, look at how the US influenced the recent changes of our own Copyright laws to be much in line with the pro-Corporation/screw-Consumer rhetoric of their DMCA policy – its only a matter of time when Harper and gang hop along the US express to invade ALL aspects of our lives ‘for the good of the justice & liberty’.

Doesn’t it look like 2008 is looking so like Orwell’s 1984?

6) HELLBOY – HELL YA! [Review link] This summer is packed with so many good movies, and so far Iron Man and Wanted have NOT disappointed me at all! The trailer is below:

The fact the Pentagon made a video, held a press conference and shared their ’success’ with the world says it all. This is the world we live in boys and girls – welcome to the ‘new’ cold war – IN SPACE!

Obama’s Cult of Personality

Tag: Politics, Steve-o-nismsadmin @ 11:46 pm

The past few days I’ve found myself writing about, and then defending one of the potential runners for the next US presidential election, Barack Obama. (read my prior posts here and here)

Recently I’ve found it to be a bit concerning, along with others, about a growing trend with supporters for Barack Obama who seem to be taking his message of change and hope far beyond its intentions and turning him into a saviour of all that is good and right, as if he was the second coming of Christ himself.

This is really stretching his campaign momentum so far from where it is meant to be, and although I don’t think that I have been led into the light (pun intended). I’ve been reading of supporters waiting for hours in the snow and rain just to get a glimpse and then praise how they haven’t been so happy to see someone since they saw – wait for it – Pope John Paul II. Another example is Oprah, with her ever reaching touch of golden prosperity commenting to the audience at a pro-Obama rally You witness a politician who has an ear for eloquence and a tongue dipped in the unvarnished truth. These are only a couple of many bold statements and sentiments that can easily be found online in news stories, videos and user comments to videos such as the ‘Yes We Can’ video hosted at DipDive.com

Barack n BearThe questions then lies why so many religious analogies are used when referring to Barack’s campaign, almost as if he were the leader of some new cult? For starters, his message put out in his speeches and videos may speak to their minds but have truly won their hearts. In any successful campaign the key is to appeal to people’s emotions as this then creates a solid connection of comfort and attachment that is far more powerful to appeal to your intellect.

Think of it this way – you watch two tv ads for fabric softener. Would you prefer the ad that lists the facts of how many loads can be used, the eco-friendly ingredients and explains in words how soft and fresh your clothes will smell? Or would you prefer an image of a cute, cuddly eddy bear speaking about how soft he feels and how much fun the blankets are to play in because they smell so nice and fresh. Which one would you choose? Chances are, you would go with the bear because he is a more appealing, friendly and comfortable character you instantly gain a good ‘feeling’ with. Think about why you like your favourite music act – is it because you admire their technical ability at playing their instrument of choice or is it because their you love the song, the sound of their voice, and you just ‘feel good’ and connected when you listen to them.

EMOTIONAL CONNECTION – that is the key, and it is this type of connection that Obama can establish with his supporters that helps him to be so likable and supported as the ‘new hope’ for America.

With that said, I still do feel Barack Obama is a very intelligent and genuine person with a host of potential leadership qualities and solid ideas – but as a president, does he have what it takes to really carry through a 4 year presidency? Its easy to get all caught up in the euphoria of the feel good message of hope and change, but this is after all an election for a leader of one of the world’s most powerful countries and must be treated as such with some sense of reason and sanity because once the euphoria passes, and it will, can you live with the decision of the who you choose? ALL voters need to truly understand that when it comes time to decide the next man or woman to lead America, they must be able to honestly address that question of trust in their hearts and competence in their minds with the answer yes I can.

Truth, Politics and the Internet

Tag: Politics, Steve-o-nismsadmin @ 9:38 pm

This is a follow up to my last post on Barack Obama and lengthy rebuttal to beanonfire [original post] and others:

As with just about every election I can remember, on both sides of the border, there is a great deal of ‘mud slinging’ that goes about to try and make the opposing candidate look bad and attempt to bring out some hidden past or lie. Barack Obama has more then had his share ever since he announced his candidacy back in January 2007.

At first they picked on his name – a Muslim name – and purposely referred to him as Barack Hussein Osama. Those against him saw that as such easy picking in a country that has an extreme case of ‘Islamphobia’ and jumped on his alleged Muslim background as proof he is wrong for president. This along with many of the points you have mentioned in your post have been circulating since the fall of 07. And all of it was an effort to educate people into the truth behind Obama. [ see video here of how mud-slinging works ]

Except that these were in fact, wrong, exagerrated or fabricated.

I have been following his story for nearly a year now because he intrigued me from the beginning. Then as his popularity grew, and I got to see some of his speeches on YouTube, I began to take notice and wondered who is this man and why is he so different then any other politician I’ve watched before?

During the televised and YouTube democratic debates over the latter part of ‘07 many of his opponents, including Hilary Clinton, brought up many of these same points and directed his response to the email being circulated around the internet. He addressed and denied these allegations on CNN as lies and falsehoods [ Video: Barack debunking the myths on CNN ]. In this clip, he even cites the wrongs by Insight Magazine, the one quoted in your post. Also, the quotes from the UK Daily Mail may be true about the nature of his biological father, but Barack had not seen him since he was a baby boy so how is that relevent today? This is the same type of attack as used against Arnold Schwarzeneggar’s father’s Nazi ties – the opposition loves these types of ‘moral bombs’ to drop on their opponents in hoping the people can find some wrong, but in both cases, their father’s actions did not influence or effect them as they hardly knew them and were not active parts of their lives.

Further to that point and his upbringing, the facts are all wrong and have not been hidden. Matter of fact, Obama has written 2 books that predate his campaigning which in both he explains his upbringing, his biological father who abandoned him and his white, agnostic mother when he was 2, and how his step-father a non-practicing Muslim who had never forced the religion onto him. The school he went to in Kenya was a mixed religion school, and then a gifted school on top of that, where he was exposed to the Muslim faith for 2 years, but also spent 2 years later in a Catholic School. By the age of 10, he was living in Hawaii and attending normal school since then. CNN and others explored the alleged ‘madrassa’ schools for what they are (see all the relevent links at end of this post).

Barrack also has publicly said he has been a Christian for over the last 20 years and regularly attends church in Chicago, Illinois, where he currently resides.

He also was open in his books about his drug abuse when he was a kid and he uses that as an example that only helps him to be a stronger person today. As well, most dismiss the smoking up issue altogether citing past leaders like Bill Clinton.

The greater fear lies in most peoples misunderstanding of the Muslim faith and the difference between Muslims and Islamic extremists (ie Al-Qaida). Its the same difference between Christians and Christian fundamentalists (ie KKK & others) On both sides, there are extremists who interpret their religious texts that best suites thier goals to violently go against anyone who does not share their beliefs.

Overall, it is easy to fall into the hype because the US, the world, is looking for and wanting a new, different visionary to help bring back the things that are right. But the real power is more then the man but in his message – together, we can bring about positive change – and this scares alot of people who have gotten very used to, and quite complacent, with the status quo under Bush for so many years. Skepticism has replaced faith. Fear has replaced fear. War has replaced diplomacy. But hope is still there, albeit barely, and as Barack said about the cynics who continue to dismiss new ideas as false hopes, ‘There is nothing false about hope.’

It is the idea – the strength in that message – that if the people really do want to change, that we ALL have the power to do so, and in ALL working together, that yes we can bring about change. What you call a cult, others say is a movement – and one that is long overdue. But what can not be dismissed is how strongly the message is gaining support across the US.

It is easy for anyone to try to counter his ideals, his background, his objectives, and in any great leader we do need the skeptics to make sure things are kept in line and honest. To date everything that has been thrown his way in attempts to damage his reputation or honesty have been dashed or brought to a proper light for all to see them as false or misconstrewed. The strongest point against him seem to be his lack of experience and being a young senator. Hilary may be the better candidate in that respect, though a ‘dream candidacy’ that is being thrown around is having a Hilary-Obama running together as Pres/Vice Pres for 2008.

You mentioned that his speeches are pre-written, as are all public speakers for the most part, which is why they sound good, but if you watch any of the interview videos or live debates you will see he really does come across as someone who truly and genuinely believes and knows what he is talking about. He also offers something new to the presidency that no really ever has before, and that is a more worldly view and understanding thanks in part to his mixed upbringing which offers him a level of credibility when he meets with world leaders from Arab nations (see 5 mins into the Google prt 1 video for his own words). He just may be the real deal, and if he proves himself to be then his legacy will be comparable to that of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King (many others share this view too).

In comparison, no matter how well the written speech may be, George Bush proved time and time again, the person delivering it still needs to have some level of competency. LOL!

Now I would not go so out of my way to post and spend time building up such a reply because I truly believe in Obama and even more so in the vision and ideals he represents. Its that kind of inspiration I have not seen or felt from a public figure in a very long time (the early days of Bill Clinton). With that, I have watched alot of videos and read many articles over the year to formulate the thoughts and opinions I share today – here are a few links to reputable sources to support the points above:

All things good with Barack Obama

Tag: Politics, Steve-o-nisms, Web Techadmin @ 9:30 am

It has been a very long time since any one person has so impressed and inspired me into what a true politician can be portrayed and possess true humanity. That person is Barack Obama. Every speech, interview and story I come across only continues to resolve my faith in a man who truly embraces truth and hope in a world that has fallen too far into dishonesty and pessimissim, just as his past November visit to Google clearly demonstrates [ view it hear - 64 mins ]

Barrack ObamaBeyond that, I had come across his website out of curiosity and was impressed with the overall design and layout. The site is an excellent example of good, modern web design – navigating the site is simple and clearly marked; key buttons and areas are quick and easy to find; easy to read and well spaced fonts and gorgeous colour choices with a very aesthetically appealing use of graphic design; overall the website IS one of the best examples of good web design I’ve seen. Have a look here – its very well done.

Though what is even more reassuring to my mind is Obama’s recent strong showing in the US Primaries, running a very close second to Hillary Clinton. His ideals of a need for change has truly struck a chord throughout the US populace, which is important to note because like it or not they still have a strong influence in the world, especially North America, and the last 8 years of unconceivable damage done by the Bush administration to the image of Western society to the world at large needs someone with a strong clear vision to reverse and fix. His words and wisdom I can only compare back to the days of John F. Kennedy, and maybe early Bill Clinton, and his thinking reflects a vision to address the challenges and issues held both continentally and globally in a positive way. I only wish we had far more politicians like Obama, especially in Canada where our own politicians seem so conservatively boring and uninspiring and lacking any real vision at all.

The US, Canada, and the world NEEDS Barack Obama for a more positive, hopeful and honest future. I would even go as far and wish I was an American just so I could vote and support this man. This video is an excellent demonstration of the strength behind his message and how it inspired a host of stars to come together on very short notice to answer that ultimate question that asks ‘can we as individuals help shape and change a better future?‘ The answer, YES WE CAN
